In a state with assault weapons bans.....the gun they go to to proctect the kids is the.....AR15! Priceless:

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — The Fontana Unified School District Police Department purchased 14 AR-15 assault weapons to protect students in response to recent shootings across the country, but some school leaders and citizens think it’s a step in the wrong direction.

FUSD Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks approved the acquisition of the rifles, which are being stored on campuses in locked safes for responding police officers in the event of an attack.

Fontana Police Chief Rodney Jones and Mayor Acquanetta Warren supported Olsen-Binks’ decision.

“It’s unfortunate that we have to have that, but it’s the best message we can send to anybody that thinks to harm our children,” said Jones. “The message we’re sending is…not here, not now, we’re prepared for you. And if you seek to harm our children, we will neutralize that threat and you will most likely be killed.”

Warren said, “Everyone wants children safe. At this time, we as a community, we have to come together and find other ways. But in the interim, our police officers need to be equipped.”

School board member Sophia Green, however, doesn’t believe anyone will be safer if weapons are kept inside schools.

“If a person who has the intention of coming on campus to kill… knows we have the AR-15s…they might come with something even bigger or better. They will come prepared,” she said. (Now there is lefty utopian)

Green said school officials, who held three public safety meetings about violence on campus, never even mentioned that they bought the weapons.

“They did have meetings, but at no point (did anyone say), ‘Semi-automatic guns will be bought,’ ‘We have semi-automatic guns,’ or ‘Semi-automatic guns are being stored on school property,’” she said.

Anna Conklin, a child development specialist, also opposed storing the guns on school grounds. She told KCAL9′s Dave Bryan that a counseling program would be a better way to address violence on campus.

“Children aren’t born with a gun in their hand and vengeance in their mind. They aren’t necessarily going to grow into being a killer. We, as a society, need to address why children are growing up to commit these acts as teens and adults. I don’t see how adding more weapons on a campus is addressing that,” Conklin said.

The police chief implied that school districts were forced to turn to high-powered weaponry for protection.

“As far as the percentage of school police departments that have them…we’re seeing a growing trend. Unfortunately, we’re seeing a growing trend where they have to do this. It’s a sad thing for society that we have to have this type of fire power in our schools, but we can’t ignore that this is the society that we live in,” said Jones.

A gun is like a parachute.

If you need one, and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again."

Yeah... odd we'd agree on some parts.

I worked at a JC in Calif and there was a small County Sherrif office on campus.  They were in effect the Campus police.

Even so....It was a big enough campus that it's unlikely they could be everywhere.

In a town Fontana's size...14 AR-15's probably adds up to 2 per school and in Calif, schools tend to be multiple buildings...campus style.  So...IF...you have a couple guns at school X...by the time anything is done ...it's apt to be rather late.  In cases like Newtown, Aurora, Columbine....there was most of the harm done before anyone could respond...and the shooter...did not seem to expect to get away with it.

This is an example of the statist mentality in which guns are good as long as they are in the hands of government. A mentality that treats private gun ownership as dangerous.

The IRONY here is:

They buy guns that they tell us we don't need and that are unsuitable for anything other than war.....to protect our kids at school but dont think you should have one at home to protect yourself and kids there!

That is because they have a statist mentality.

If it wasn't such a stupid idea, it would be funny.  But than most of the stupid ideas come from the left.

I guess this school has more money than brains. The people of this district need to remove these idiots.

Well...may be some incomplete info...altogether.  I'm not clear on just WHO is expected to get and use one of those guns.  I'm not sure it's not a case of too little and too late or even a case of "Murphy's Law" where the concept goes all wrong.

A reason Police do not use assault rifles more...is that in a populated area...a "stray round" can kill some unlucky person far away. In a panic situation...is the second grade teacher thinking about that?

i'm not altogether against having an armed security at a school...but...if you are hasty...cheap...thoughtless about it you may have more problem than solution. If you expect Mr Jones the math teacher is your"plan A" for security...what if HE is who flips out, goes postal, and you set him up with the weapon?  Ooops.

Suppose Lanza did not walk up...with a Bushmaster...in full costume. Suppose he looked like an ordainairy parent...a teacher coming to work..got there earlier when kids and teachers arrived. How does a guard at the door...KNOW?   Lanza COULD have used a pistol with 5 30 rd clips...and the guard can't ASSUME...until Lanza whips it out..shoots him at close range.  Flip side...how about a "rent a cop" who's OVER vigilant and shoots a guy who reached into his jacket for a cell phone?

IDEALLY....there's a list of about 20 ideas that "could help" and practically...were we to do them all (unlikely) we improve the odds. We don't get fully SAFE.  We OUGHT to want to improve the odds...and we won't be WILLING to do much.

I'm quite willing to sacrifice any urge to have a costly gun and a 30 rd clip. I am willing to pay to make America a little safer.  Maybe the next 100 victims of whoever...are total strangers...maybe friends...maybe family.  I am an American and I care  either way.   We are too Fcked up...to do the right thing but...we can at least take the small easy steps...improve the odds a bit.

Well....those guns ARE locked down. To be a TEACHER...a person probably can't be a raving loon or a carreer criminal.

We are unlikely to REALLY screen who has guns that are especially suited to Murder in Bulk.   The recent fuss...has been disturbing.

My impression is thaty some 90-95% of Americans who have/own/use guns...don't see a big need or role for an M-16/AK type weapon, for a clip beyond 10 rounds.  If you can't hit me with 10 fuggin' bullets...you're a safety hazard.  I know that even limited to a 10 rd clip....one can still reload fast and blaze away.   What's FREAKY.....it that the MOST psycho types have some LUST...some unnatural FETISH going here.  The Assault Rifle/big mag thing...is a big deal to a SMALL FACTION...and that faction is...showing their true colors.

These phucking lefties are out of their collective phucking minds.

First, the horror - all semi-autos are bad bad bad.  They're overkill, they're not needed.

Next: Kalifornia school district pre-positioning previously described skeery rifles in their schools......for safety.

These lunatics need to be phucking put in the looney bin.
